About us

The Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat is a vital interface between global policies in the economic, social and environmental spheres and national action.

The Department works in three main areas, all of which are interlinked: it compiles, generates and analyses a wide range of economic, social and environmental information and data on which the Member States of the United Nations draw in order to review common problems and take stock of policy options; it facilitates the negotiations of Member States in many intergovernmental bodies on joint courses of action to address ongoing or emerging global challenges; furthermore, it advises Governments – when required – on how to translate into programmes at the country level the policy frameworks developed during United Nations conferences and summits, and contributes to capacity building at the national level by providing technical assistance.

The UN/DESA Office in Italy promotes and coordinates several important development cooperation initiatives – in particular in the area of human resources development – within the framework of UN/DESA’s mandate, liaising accordingly with Italian and European institutions, civil society organizations and the business sector.

This web site aims to provide the general public with useful information on UN/DESA’s activities in Italy and beyond.
