The Fellowship Programme
CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
Compensation
Fellows receive a monthly stipend during the entire period of their fellowship. The stipend paid to fellows while residing outside their home country is a monthly allowance intended to cover the cost of lodging, board and other basic expenses (e.g. laundry and local transportation). It is neither a salary nor a fee for service rendered. It is not intended to cover the fellows’ continuing expenses at home for themselves, nor their families. Stipend rates are paid in local currency and revised on a monthly basis by the UN according to the cost of living in the country of destination. All fellows are provided with a roundtrip ticket to/from their country of destination.
Medical insurance
Fellows are automatically enrolled in the Van Breda comprehensive global insurance scheme for the entire period of their fellowship. This medical insurance provides coverage also for death and disability.
Structure of the Fellowship
- Training of selected participants (two weeks)
Prior to the departure for their duty stations, selected participants will attend a training course on different aspects related to international development cooperation activities. In particular the training focuses on the planning and execution of projects applying the procedures used in multilateral and bilateral cooperation activities. The training is usually held at the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) in Turin.
- On-the-job training (11 months and a half)
Fellows are placed in technical cooperation offices and organizations of the UN System in developing countries to acquire on the job training on all the components of the project cycle. They learn the application and functioning of various technical cooperation models and share these skills and know-how with local counterparts.
